They are annoying and really, they show. But why do spots appear on our skin? There are several reasons, which we are going to tell you about below.
- By the effect of solar radiation. The sun stimulates cells called ‘melanocytes’, which are responsible for producing the pigment that gives our skin its color. Sometimes this pigment can accumulate in the most superficial layer of the skin, the epidermis, giving rise to the appearance of visible spots on the skin.
- Because of the pregnancy. Melasma is another common type of hyperpigmentation. It is characterized by brown spots that appear on the cheeks, forehead, nose, upper lip, and chin. This type of discoloration is generally called a ‘pregnancy mask’ because it is very common in pregnant women. Birth control pills and certain medications can also trigger this type of discoloration.
- For consuming medications. Some can be ‘photosensitizers’ and therefore cause darkening of the skin. Which are we talking about? Pain medications if you are allergic to them, neurologicals, sleeping pills, some asthma medications, some hormonal therapies or birth control pills, diuretics and medications for more serious problems such as diabetes and hypertension.
- Beware of perfumes. They are also powerful ‘photosensitizers’, like some of the colorants in your makeup, the preservatives to keep cosmetics and face products fresh, and even some of the chemical ingredients that are used to give a sunscreen effect in skincare products. face and body.
- Be careful with the interior lights. I mean TV screens, computer screens, fluorescent lamps, halogen lights, incandescent lights, and other decorative indoor lights. Also, infrared light that is emitted by heat sources such as fireplaces, stoves, ovens, or saunas could cause or exacerbate skin blemishes.
