Maintain Your Dreadlocks Healthy

Dreadlocks, more than just a hairstyle, are a symbol of identity and personal expression. With their distinctive texture and deeply rooted cultural history, dreadlocks are a bold statement of individuality and authenticity. However, keeping them healthy and looking good requires proper care and attention. Here are some tips to ensure your dreadlocks look radiant and stay in optimal condition.

  1. Creation and Maintenance

Creating dreadlocks can be a lengthy process, ranging from 4 to 6 hours depending on the quantity and length of hair. After the initial creation, it’s recommended to have touch-ups every two or three months to maintain their shape and appearance.

  1. Daily Care

Sleeping with a tam (sleeping cap) helps keep dreadlocks in place and prevents them from unraveling while you rest. Additionally, regularly rubbing them with the palms of your hands helps naturally compact the hair and maintain its shape.

  1. Washing

Contrary to common myth, dreadlocks do need to be washed to maintain hair hygiene. It’s important to wet the dreadlocks before washing and use soap, preferably coconut-based, to clean both the locks and the roots. Conditioning is discouraged as it can unravel the dreadlocks by aiding in hair detangling.

  1. Washing Frequency

It’s recommended to wash dreadlocks once or twice a week to keep them clean without altering their shape. Ensuring that the dreadlocks are completely dry after washing is crucial to prevent moisture buildup and unpleasant odours.

  1. Durability and Undoing Dreadlocks

With proper care, dreadlocks can last for years as the hair continues to lock over time. It’s important to note that the only way to remove dreadlocks is by cutting the hair, so it’s a decision that requires consideration.

  1. Additional Care

Avoid using oils or products that can accumulate in the hair as this can affect its appearance and scent. Keep your dreadlocks dry and tidy to ensure they always look their best.
