Ministry of Health’s Warning on Eye Health

The Ministry of Health is issuing a crucial advisory to all Kenyans, particularly those residing in the Coastal region, regarding the recent outbreak of red eye disease. Reported cases have surfaced across various counties, including Mombasa, Malindi, Kisii, and Lamu. Understanding the symptoms, causes, and preventive measures associated with eye ailments is imperative to safeguarding public health.

Conjunctivitis (Pink Eye):

Symptoms such as redness, itching, tearing, and eye discharge characterize conjunctivitis. This condition can be caused by viruses, bacteria, allergens, or irritants. To prevent its spread, practicing good hygiene, refraining from touching the eyes with unwashed hands, and avoiding the sharing of personal items are essential precautions.

Subconjunctival Hemorrhage:

Manifesting as a bright red patch on the white part of the eye, subconjunctival hemorrhage typically occurs without discharge or pain. The bursting of small blood vessels due to factors like straining, sneezing, coughing, or eye injury can lead to this condition. Preventative measures include minimizing eye strain, protecting the eyes from injury, and maintaining overall health.

Dry Eyes:

Dry eyes present symptoms such as redness, irritation, burning, and a sensation of dryness. Insufficient tear production or rapid tear evaporation can contribute to this condition. Combat dry eyes by using artificial tears, blinking frequently, and avoiding environmental factors that exacerbate dryness.

Allergic Reactions:

Exposure to allergens such as pollen, dust, or pet dander can trigger allergic reactions in the eyes, resulting in redness, itching, and watery eyes. To mitigate allergic reactions, individuals should avoid allergens, utilize antihistamine eye drops, and maintain cleanliness in their surroundings.

In light of the recent outbreak and prevalent eye health concerns, proactive measures must be taken to protect oneself and others. Heightened awareness, adherence to preventive guidelines, and prompt medical attention in case of symptoms are paramount in combatting eye ailments. Let us unite in prioritizing eye health and collectively work towards a healthier and safer community.
