Panettone: A Christmas Classic to Enjoy with Family

Pan dulce is a Christmas tradition that adds warmth and flavor to the celebrations. This bread is perfect for accompanying a cup of hot chocolate or coffee during the holidays. Here’s a simple recipe to make your own pan dulce at home.

Ingredients:

  • 500 g all-purpose flour
  • 100 g sugar
  • 10 g salt
  • 20 g fresh yeast
  • 250 ml warm milk
  • 100 g butter (melted)
  • 2 eggs
  • 100 g dried fruit (such as raisins and almonds) or candied fruit (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Powdered sugar for decoration (optional)

Instructions:

  • In a large bowl, mix the flour, sugar, and salt. Dissolve the yeast in the warm milk and add it to the flour mixture along with the melted butter, eggs, and vanilla extract. Mix well until you get a smooth and homogeneous dough.
  • Knead the dough for about 10 minutes on a floured surface until it is elastic and smooth. If using dried or candied fruit, incorporate them at this stage, kneading lightly to distribute them.

  • Form a ball with the dough and place it in a greased bowl. Cover with a cloth and let it rest in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until it has doubled in size.
  • Once the dough has risen, gently knead it to deflate and place it in a greased bread pan. Let it rest again for 30 minutes to rise a bit more.

  • Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F) and bake the bread for 30-35 minutes, or until golden brown and it sounds hollow when tapped on the base. Let it cool on a rack before decorating with powdered sugar, if desired.
