07 Jun The Importance of Authentic Communication
A healthy relationship is built on honest and empathetic communication. It’s not just about saying what we think, but about knowing how to listen and understand the other person without judgment.
The key is to speak from the emotion, using phrases that begin with “I feel” instead of pointing the finger at the other person. For example, instead of saying “You never pay attention to me,” try saying “I feel ignored when we’re together and you’re looking at your phone.”
This helps the other person understand your perspective without getting defensive. It’s also essential to practice active listening: truly paying attention, without interrupting or thinking about your response. Look at your partner, nod, and repeat part of what they say to make sure you’ve understood.
Good communication doesn’t always mean agreeing, but it does mean respecting each other and finding a solution together.
