The Versatility of Banana Peels

The Versatility of Banana Peels

Bananas are an extremely versatile fruit. Available all year round, they adapt to numerous recipes and come in their own convenient natural packaging. Their peel not only protects the fruit during ripening but also offers practical solutions for various everyday situations.

Natural Plant Fertiliser

Banana peels can be used as an eco-friendly fertiliser for both indoor and outdoor plants. To use them, cut the peels into small pieces about one centimetre in size and bury them near the base of the plants once a month. This will release magnesium, potassium, phosphorus, and other beneficial minerals that enrich the soil.

Fly and Mosquito Control

While banana peels can attract flies and mosquitoes, they can also be used to trap them. Place several peels in a covered container, poke small holes in the lid (no more than half a centimetre in diameter), and let the insects enter drawn by the smell. Once the container is full of insects, discard it along with the peels and repeat the process as needed.

Flavouring Rice

A lesser-known trick to give rice a more exotic flavour is to use banana peels. Place the peels inside a cloth bag or tie them with string and steam the rice with them. The rice will absorb the flavour and nutrients from the banana, resulting in a dish with a unique twist.
