Unlocking Happiness: Harvard’s Recipes

Hormones such as dopamine, oxytocin, serotonin, and endorphins have been the stars in discussions about mood changes, sleep, concentration, and sexual desire. Responsible for overall well-being, these hormones are key to achieving and maintaining moments of happiness in everyday life.

Although total happiness is a mirage, Harvard University offers two recipes to activate these hormones and promote emotional well-being.

Hugs: The Recipe for Love

Research shows that hugs reduce stress, stabilize heart rate, and increase the release of oxytocin, known as the love hormone. A study in the PLOS journal details how physical contact can eliminate negative mood and the perception of personal conflict. A simple gesture that triggers a cascade of positive hormonal reactions.

Outdoor Exercise: Nature and Endorphins

Physical activity in nature is a winning combination. Walking, running, or engaging in outdoor sports stimulates the production of endorphins, the hormone that combats pain and stress. The combination of fresh oxygen and bodily movement triggers a hormonal response that relieves stress and creates a conducive space for joy.

Hormonal Balance as a Goal

The key is to maintain emotional balance by sustaining the four hormones: serotonin for pleasure, oxytocin for love, endorphins for pain relief, and dopamine for the brain’s reward system.
