Salmiakki is a Finnish candy made with black licorice and ammonium chloride, giving it a strong, salty taste. While it’s a delicacy for locals, it can be a challenge for those unaccustomed to its flavor.
Ingredients:
- 100 g licorice extract
- 200 g sugar
- 100 ml water
- 1 teaspoon ammonium chloride (available in specialty stores)
- Cornstarch for dusting
Preparation:
- In a saucepan, mix sugar, licorice extract, and water over low heat until dissolved.
- Add ammonium chloride and stir well.
- Pour the mixture into molds and let it cool.
- Unmold and dust with cornstarch to prevent sticking.
- Salmiakki is enjoyed in candies, ice creams, and even liquors.
