Pre-shampoo: Why to Use It and When to Apply It to Transform Your Hair

Pre-shampoo, also known as pre-wash, has become an essential step in modern haircare routines. Although it may seem like an extra, it is a powerful tool for improving the health and appearance of your hair, especially if you want more softness, shine and frizz control. Its main purpose is to prepare the hair fibre before washing, creating a protective layer that prevents dryness and boosts the effects of your shampoo and conditioner.

Why use it?

Because it works like a shield. Pre-shampoo products —whether oils, nourishing masks or repairing treatments— help prevent shampoo from removing too much of your natural oils. They also strengthen the hair, reduce porosity and limit breakage when detangling. It is ideal if you have dry, coloured, curly or heat-damaged hair.

When to apply it?

It is recommended to use it once or twice a week, before your usual wash. If your hair is very dry, apply it from mid-lengths to ends 20 to 30 minutes before showering. If your hair is oily or fine, choose a lighter pre-shampoo and leave it on for less time. You can also apply it before a deep-cleanse wash to maintain hydration balance.

Adding this step will make a visible difference: your hair will become softer, more manageable and better protected. A small habit that elevates any routine.
