World Recipe: Sweet Knots

Sweet knots are a simple, crispy Italian treat, perfect for enjoying with a cup of coffee or as a little indulgence at any time of day. Their name comes from the shape given to the dough before frying. With just a few ingredients and an easy method to follow, you can prepare this sweet treat at home and enjoy it freshly made.

Ingredients

  • 200 g flour
  • 30 g caster sugar
  • 40 g butter
  • 1 egg
  • ½ glass dry white wine
  • Oil for frying
  • 25 g icing sugar
  • 1 pinch of salt

Preparation

  • Place the flour on a work surface and mix it with the caster sugar and a pinch of salt. Make a well in the centre and add the butter cut into small pieces, the egg and the white wine. If you enjoy the flavour of anise, you can use less wine and make up the difference with anise liqueur.
  • Knead all the ingredients until you have a firm, smooth dough. Then roll it out with a rolling pin until you have a sheet that is just a few millimetres thick.
  • Using a pastry wheel or knife, cut the dough into strips approximately 20 cm long and 3 cm wide. Fold each strip and shape it into a small knot, making sure it is well formed.
  • Heat plenty of oil in a frying pan. Once the oil is hot, fry the knots in batches, avoiding overcrowding the pan, until they are golden-brown.
  • Remove them and place them on absorbent paper to drain off any excess oil. Leave them to cool and, before serving, generously dust with icing sugar.

And that’s it! A simple Italian sweet treat to share and enjoy.
