02 Ago World Recipes: Tampinade
Slovenian cuisine is known for its unique blend of Central European, Mediterranean, and Balkan influences. While many traditional dishes feature meats, soups, and homemade breads, the country’s coastal regions along the Adriatic Sea have developed a rich seafood tradition. Tampinade is a lesser-known recipe that highlights this maritime heritage, combining fresh shrimp with aromatic herbs and cured meat to create a simple yet elegant dish.

The recipe reflects the Mediterranean flavors that have shaped Slovenian coastal cooking for centuries. Fresh seafood, olive oil, garlic, and herbs are staples of the region, and Tampinade brings these ingredients together in a preparation that is both rustic and refined. Its straightforward method allows the natural flavors to shine, making it a favorite for casual gatherings and special occasions alike.

Ingredients:
250 g peeled shrimp
1 cup white wine
100 g prosciutto
2 tbsp grated garlic
4 tbsp olive oil
Salt, to taste
Black pepper, to taste
100 g fresh basil leaves

Preparation:
Place the shrimp in a bowl and marinate them for 30 minutes with the olive oil, white wine, and grated garlic. Season lightly with salt and black pepper.
Once marinated, drain the shrimp and wrap each one with a basil leaf and a slice of prosciutto, securing them gently if necessary.

Preheat a grill or grill pan over medium-high heat. Cook the wrapped shrimp for about 3 minutes on each side, or until the shrimp are fully cooked and the prosciutto is lightly crisp.
Serve immediately while hot. The combination of garlic-infused shrimp, fragrant basil, and savory prosciutto creates a delicious balance of flavors and textures. Whether served as an appetizer, a light meal, or part of a seafood feast, Tampinade showcases the fresh and vibrant character of Slovenia’s coastal cuisine.
