The “Pet Kids” Generation

The “Pet Kids” Generation

The so-called “pet kids” generation refers mainly to millennials and Generation Z who consider their pets as full-fledged family members—almost like their own children. Celebrating their birthdays, dressing them in special outfits, or sharing their social media accounts with them are just some of the ways this bond becomes visible. This trend has grown significantly in recent years and reflects a new way of relating to animals.

Why do we prefer pets? Dogs and cats offer unconditional love, constant companionship, and, compared to human children, involve fewer responsibilities. Additionally, their presence is known to have very positive effects on mental health, helping to reduce stress and anxiety in daily life.

But is it healthy to treat them like children? It’s normal to develop a strong attachment to our pets, but we must remember that they are animals with their own needs and behaviors. Treating a dog or cat as if it were a human baby can lead to misunderstandings and behavioral problems. The best approach is to offer them love, proper training, and respect for their nature.

Is this a passing fad or a new form of family? Beyond opinions, the “pet kids” generation reflects social and cultural changes and shows how people seek companionship and affection in a context where ideas about family are evolving.
